This program prepares students for graduate study in social work or careers in service to others in individual and community settings. Students take courses in sociology, psychology, and community and human services to integrate knowledge and understanding of the socio-economic and cultural context through which community and human services are delivered to provide students with the cultural competence needed to deliver effective services. In addition to a junior year practicum, the program culminates in an internship with a human services agency to provide students with experience in applying theory into professional practice.

Why Study This Program?
The Bachelor of Arts in Community and Human Services is an interdisciplinary program preparing students for graduate study in social work or careers in service to others in individual and community settings. Students take courses in sociology, psychology, and community and human services to integrate knowledge and understanding of the socio-economic and cultural context through which community and human services are delivered to provide students with the cultural competence needed to deliver effective services.
The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation for pursuit of a Master of Social Work as it is designed around the standards established by the Council on Social Work Education so that students are well-prepared to continue on in graduate study. Students are highly encouraged to choose a minor in either Criminal Justice Studies or Diversity Studies in conjunction with the degree. In addition to a junior year practicum, the program culminates in an internship with a human services agency to provide students with experience in applying theory into professional practice.
This theory to practice approach to learning, as well as intentional preparation for graduate study, are what distinguish our program from other programs!

After graduation from the proposed program, students will be well positioned for entry into graduate study in a Master of Social Work or a related graduate degree based on the substantial research components, theoretical foundations, and practical experience throughout the curriculum. Eight public universities in Illinois offer a Master’s of Social Work with Illinois State University and University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana being the closest in proximity to Lincoln College. Additionally, Western Illinois University and Northwestern University offer graduate study in the field of community organization and advocacy.
For students who do not wish to pursue graduate study immediately after graduation, employment opportunities include:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that employment opportunities in community and social service occupations are projected to grow by 10% between 2014 and 2024 with a median income of $42,000 per year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also projects that employment opportunities in the general health care and social assistance sector will grow by 23% through 2024.
